What is Better Than the Original Karate Kid?

The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid

Hopefully the remake of The Karate Kid!  The Karate Kid opens this weekend, Friday June 11th, with a surprising cast.  The son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden Smith plays the karate kid, and Jackie Chan plays Mr. Miyagi.  The film is set in China, which promises to be aesthetically beautiful.

It’s the same old story – boy gets picked on, boy learns to defend himself.  ‘Paint the fence’, ‘wax on and off’, or in this case, ‘jacket on and off’ (it’s in the Karate Kid movie preview).  Check it out:

The original Karate Kid movie was released in 1984 and starred Ralph Macchio as Daniel (the karate kid), Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi (the ninja master), and Elizabeth Shue as Ali (the girlfriend).  Believe it or not, there were actually three sequels:  The Karate Kid, Part II (1986); The Karate Kid, Part III (1989); and The Next Karate Kid (1994), with Hilary Swank (did anyone see that?).

Seriously, did anyone see the 1994 release with Hilary Swank?  Was it any good?

I got a lovely email in my inbox this morning from Apple all about the new iPhone 4.  Is anyone else as excited as I am?  What would I pay for an iPhone 4?  An arm?  A leg?  Maybe.  It’s a good thing the iPhone 4 will only cost $199 for entry.

iPhone 4

Some highlights of the phone are:

  • multitasking (no more closing apps to use another app!)
  • HD video recording
  • Super high resolution (960 x 640 res)
  • Better battery life
  • Engineered glass (more durable, better reception)

Some say this phone is so well-equipped, the only thing missing is (more…)

Al and Tipper Gore Kiss

Al and Tipper Gore Kiss

Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife Tipper are calling it splits after 40-years of marriage. So what went wrong with overly affectionate couple?

The Gores say it was “a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration.”

The Gores were married on May 19th, 1970. The split comes as a surprise to many after sentiments like these from Al:

[Tipper is] “someone I’ve loved with my whole heart since the night of my high school senior prom.”

[I want to thank] “with all my heart my children and grandchildren, and especially my beloved partner in life, Tipper.”

The Gores have four adult kids, Karenna, Kristin, Sarah and Albert III.

Perhaps it was that weedeater Al gave Tipper for her birthday that one year.

Perhaps it was this kiss…

In any case, we wish you the best Al and Tipper!

LenDale White Already Waived by Seahawks?

LenDale White

LenDale White

It’s only been just shy over a month since LenDale White was traded from Tennessee, and already he’s been waived by the Seattle Seahawks.

General Manager John Schneider said that he wasn’t a right fit for the team and added, “it became apparent at this time that LenDale was not ready to be a member of the Seattle Seahawks.”

White was looking forward to working with Seahawks Coach Peter Carroll again, as he did at USC.

White was drafted into the NFL in 2006, round 2, pick 45, and debuted for the Tennessee Titans.  He’s made 24 touchdowns, with 2,348 rushing yards.

Some believe White never was fully prepared for the NFL, never having done a full workout for the NFL Scouts.  ESPN’s Fantasy Focus Podcast calls him “Big Fat LenDale White”.  Ouch.

So what’s next for LenDale White?  Only time will tell.  In the meantime, let’s remember some highlights:

Gary Coleman Died From a Brain Hemorrhage

Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman

Gary Coleman has died from a brain hemorrhage, it has been confirmed.  He went into a coma and his condition worsened so much that he was put on life support.  It was determined that he was not going to recover, so life support was terminated.  He was 42-years-old and died at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Here is a great video clip of a compilation of his work on Diff’rent Strokes:

Gary was super cute in Diff’rent Strokes – in part because of his ‘littleness’.  He suffered from a kidney disease called Nephritis, which caused his stunted growth.  His first kidney transplant was a from a Greek kid who was hit by a car.

Gary is the second star sibling out of the three kids on Diff’rent Strokes to die.  His costar, Dana Plato, who played his sister, Kimberly Drummond, died from an intentional drug overdose in 1999.  Sadly, her son Tyler Lambert, 25, killed himself this month with a gunshot would to the head, two days shy of his mother’s 11 year death anniversary.

Gary Coleman is in Critical Condition

Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson

Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson

The child star Gary Coleman is in critical condition at a hospital in Provo, Utah.  While there are no details yet, apparently it is related to a head injury.  Coleman was also briefly hospitalized about three months ago after a having a seizure while being interviewed.

Gary Coleman is best known for the hit TV Show Diff’rent Strokes from the early 80s.  He played the character Arnold Jackson, whose famous line was ‘Whatchu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?’

Coleman has had a string of health problems since he was a child, mostly related to a kidney disease, for which he still receives ongoing dialysis.

He was recently married in 2007 to a girl he met on the set of “Church Ball”.  Here is the trailer:

Here’s to hoping Gary Coleman has a speedy recover.

On a personal note, I lived in Utah County for years and from time-to-time would run into Gary at restaurants, movies, etc.  It sure was a trip to see him in person after watching him on Diff’rent Strokes when I was a kid!

For more information, see the Associated Press Release on Gary’s injury.

What the heck is WTK?

On May 27, 2010, in Music, by Angela DiGiovanni

I saw that WTK was trending and my first thought was, what the heck is WTK?

On Twitter, people are saying things like ‘It took me two songs in WTK time to get to school.’ and, ‘It takes me a whole WTK album to get to the city.’  Okay, so I figure they are a band.

WTK stands for We the Kings, a Florida band on S-Curve Records.  They released their self-titled album in 2007 and then ‘Smile Kid’ in December of 2009.  The band name comes from the boys’ middle school name, King Middle School.  Favorite fan songs are ‘Yes Juliet’ and ‘Skyway Avenue’.

Here is a video of Yes Juliet lyrics:

The members of the band are:

  • Travis Clark: Lead vocals, guitar, piano
  • Hunter Thompsen: lead guitar, back up vocals
  • Drew Thompsen: bass
  • Danny Duncan: drums

For more information visit Wiki’s page on WTK.

Lee DeWyze Wins American Idol

On May 27, 2010, in American Idol, by Angela DiGiovanni

Lee versus CrystalLee DeWyze wins American Idol by less than a 2% gap in the votes!  Honestly it was the most inspiring and gracious win ever.  If I’m being honest (total Simon comment), I got all teary-eyed and smiley throughout the whole thing. ; -)  Lee just kept repeating, “thank you, thank you everybody!”

You know my opinion (as referenced in my post titled The Next American Idol… Lee DeWyze or Crystal Bowersox) – I’d have been happy for either one.  Crystal Bowersox was gracious and supportive, and I’m sure Lee would have been the same had it been the other way around.

Not only was this the American Idol Season 9 finale, but it was also a tribute to Simon Cowell, as it’s his last night on the show.  For me, it was the coolest finale ever.  It sort of took me back to the 80′s – I think the only band missing was Huey Lewis and the news.

The top 12 finalists opened the show with Alice cooper and his conglomerate of black-eyed, rogue school kid choir.

Chris Allen, the season 8 winner, performed his new single and sounded awesome!

Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelly grooved to How Deep Is Your Love with the BeeGee’s.

Big Mike Lynch and Michael McDonald sang Taking It To The Street and had a cute little connection there at the end of their performance.

Dane Cook sung the ‘Simon Said’ song – a mock tribute with many of Simon’s over-the-top derogatory comments to contestants.  Very funny, it was.  Just when you thought it was funny enough on its own, previous contestants came out to the stage who received these very comments.

The top 6 girls belted out Christina Aguilara’s You Are Beautiful and Fighter.  X-tina appeared at the end of Fighter and then sung her song off Bionic, You Lost Me.  She put a lot of energy into that performance and even got all teary-eyed.

Ricky Gervais, from the British The Office, offered a satellite tribute to his good buddy Simon.  Of course it was full of jokes, including that he was going to raid Simon’s house garbage cans because he knew he wasn’t home right now and that he knows Simon throws his money away if it gets too wrinkled.  ;-)

The top 6 guys sung Can’t Go For That and then Maneater with Hall and Oats.  Darryl Hall and John Oats then sang, You Make My Dreams Come True.  Dude, I don’t remember John Oats being so dang short!  Other than that, they looked exactly like I remember them from the 80s.

Crystal Bowersox started in on Ironic before introducing Alanis Morissette to the stage.  They then powered through You Oughta Know, complete with Alanis’s usual bobble head.  I will say Alanis’s hair was quite rockin’!

Carrie Underwood, looking exceptionally slim and great, entertained with her new single, Undo It.  It’s definitely more of a pop song than country and it was an awesome performance.

Chris Allen presented Lee and Crystal with the keys to the Ford Fiesta cars they designed way back several episodes ago.  Though it was supposedly a surprise, they seem more surprised to see Chris and they seemed to get the cars.

Casey James rocked out to Every Rose Has It’s Thorn, and much to my satisfaction, Bret Michaels even showed up!  That was pretty amazing considering all of his medical issues he’s been dealing with.  Great throwback song.  I love that song.

Lee and Chicago did a medley – Chicago not on top of their game, sadly.

Ryan welcomed the Pants on The Ground General dude from the infamous audition!  He sounded okay, but his dance moves were the real show!  Joining the General halfway through was William Hung; who sadly, acted as ignorant as could be.  We should all just put the William Hung thing behind us.  It’s over.

A very nice surprise was… Paula Abdul!  She showed up on stage looking really stunning in a cute pink mini dress.  She was poised and funny and sincere, paying a Simon tribute.

Another great surprise was 7 previous season winners graced the stage as a thank you to Simon… Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Jordan Sparks, Taylor Hicks, and Chris Allen.  David Cook was missing… Halfway into their song, a bunch of prior seasons contestants joined them on stage.  My guess is they were ones who have gone on in the recording industry.

Finally, the top 12 did a little intro for Janet Jackson, who was sporting a super short new do.  She sang her song ‘Nothing’, and I swear, if you closed your eyes and didn’t know it was her, you’d think for sure it was Michael Jackson.  Spot on.  It was beautiful.  And let me just say, her makeup was perfect and her skin is luminously perfect.  Her second song was ‘Nasty Boys’.  I’m telling you, it was a total 80s night as far as music goes.  It was great!

Before the grand announcement of who won, Lee and Crystal sang ‘A Little Help From My Friends’ with Joe Cocker.  The dude is getting old, but he can still sing it.

Yay Lee.  Of course, Crystal will put out albums too, so let’s not go feeling sorry for anyone.  It was just Lee’s destiny, especially considering the gap was less than 2%.
